Recently I attended a HR Conference, wherein, majority of the speakers opined the need for the women to not take a break from their career. They, alike most of us, have their perspective loud on the issue on how there’s a lot to the career of a women than becoming better, daughters, wives, mothers or sisters etc. One of the ideas which stuck my cord was, why Women take a Pause in their careers at the first place? And once taken, what takes them so long to restart, or why does the sabbatical inevitably distances themselves from the Industry?
“Why take a break at the first place. If taken, why the sabbatical is so difficult to end”
Women, as we all know, sometimes consensually, sometime fulfilling the priorities, take small and big sabbaticals from work. Getting married, husband’s transfer, maternal leaves, someone has to make the house, parents, kids care, are a few of the uncountable and unmeasurable reasons of how women are justified for taking a break from their career. And once the sabbatical begins, it never stops, or it stagnates the career from achieving optimum results.
However, the question is not of the notion of taking a break. Following personal priorities, there’s nothing wrong in taking a sabbatical by the women, or the man of the house. The real question is,’Why does the sabbatical end the career’? Or Why do we not have the same number of opportunities, for the women coming from a long sabbatical, as we have for other women.
The bigger questions,”Why do we not have the same number of opportunities, for the women coming from a long sabbatical, as we have for other women”
How can women start their careers again after taking a break from work
To start with, it’s the responsibility of every Industry to create opportunities for the women to comfortably resume their work after a long career break. The trust and the zeal of a career has to be re-ignited and replaced with the pessimism these women imbibe over the years.
Upman Placements, for example, is creating opportunities for the women from the recruitment and HR industry - on a long career break, win back at the Recruiters business. It has launched a partnership model, wherein, women can partner with Upman Placements and start their entrepreneurial journey right from their homes.
Upman is giving them resources, business, clients, team and most importantly its name to outset their career. With this, they’ll earn, as much, or more than what they could have earned otherwise, if their recruitment career had been ongoing. They can work from home, build their business, take support from the team and garner a strong recruitment business, irrespective of their geographic location.
Only by creating opportunities will we be able to give, women at home, a chance to get back to work. Yes, women who have talent, experience and qualifications do take Pause in their careers for, however, they do, can & should look at restarting their career at any phase of life.
